Cascade Lodge Trip
Each February, CCS students
spend a night in the mountains just north of Purgatory at Cascade Lodge. The lodge is a rustic hunting lodge that
is over 100 years old! |
|
|
| This is not only a time for snowshoeing
and learning about sub-nivean (under the snow) habitats. It is also an event that strengthens the fabric of our
community. |
 |
|
After the students spend a day adventuring
and learning in the snow, many parents join us for supper. We gather around the warmth of the coal stove for songs,
stories and skits. Strange as it seems, our camaraderie tends to draw visitors from the past, including Galileo,
Thomas Edison, The Unsinkable Molly Brown, and Harriet Tubman! |
Although such a trip is a wonderful adventure that can be a lifetime memory, it also takes lots of work. We appreciate
all the help that we can get from you in terms of driving, bringing food, and other details. THANKS!!
We cannot take any
student who has not returned a permission slip. |
| WHAT IFs: |
| |
If for any reason we are detained... |
| |
|
We will leave a message on the school
answering machine by 2:15. (259-1189) |
| |
If you need to contact us... |
| |
|
Cascade Lodge (emergency number only:
247-1459) |
Total trip cost will be $20 per student.
($10 lodging + $10 food) We ask the adults who will be eating supper with us to contribute $5 for food as well.
Being prepared for an adventure in the mountains is essential for each child. Warm clothing, boots, gloves, extra
clothes, etc. are A MUST if your child plans to attend. If there are any items on the list that you do not have,
be sure to contact us. (Many folks have extra outdoor gear and clothing that they don't mind lending, BUT YOU MUST
CALL US IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM GETTING WHAT YOU NEED. We will make every effort to help you if you call us in advance.)
| WHAT TO PACK: |
| |
coat and hat |
| |
snow pants that shed snow i.e. Nylon shell pants. |
| |
|
Jeans and sweatpants do not work unless
there is some sort of shell over them. |
| |
good boots, and if possible, a pair of gaiters. Send snowshoes if you have
them. |
| |
3 pairs of extra socks |
| |
at least one change of clothing |
| |
at least 2 pairs of gloves or mittens |
| |
|
(knit gloves or mittens need to have
some sort of overmitt to shed the snow) |
| |
REMEMBER, AS FAR AS SOCKS AND OUTDOOR
CLOTHING THAT MIGHT/WILL GET WET GOES: "COTTON IS ROTTEN!" Polar fleece or special ski socks can make
all the difference in comfort level for kids outside. (click here for ideas) |
| |
toiletries (toothbrush and toothpaste, washcloth, comb or brush, etc.) INCLUDING
sunscreen |
| |
sleeping bag and a pillow |
| |
|
The coal stove keeps going all night,
but it can be pretty cool by morning. |
| |
a book to read in the evening or for "down time" |
| |
shoes to wear inside the lodge (tennis shoes or slippers) |
| |
warm comfortable clothing, including a pair of long underwear if possible |
| |
a mug with name on it (to use for drinks when we are in the lodge) |
| |
optional: flashlight, Bible, camera, sheet to cover mattress |
Students are encouraged to bring tubes
for sledding if they have one available, but please DO NOT INFLATE THEM. (We need all the space we can get) We
will have a portable compressor available to fill them up at the lodge.
OUR JOB WILL BE MUCH
SIMPLER IF YOU HELP YOUR STUDENT TO PACK.
The night before we leave we will send home a large black plastic trash bag. Put your child's duffle/suitcase
inside that bag. Everything you are sending to Cascade should fit inside. |
|
| HOW ABOUT FOOD?? |
| Each student should come to school with: |
| |
a sack lunch in a day pack NO LUNCH BOXES, PLEASE. |
| |
|
(The daypack is also a good place to
pack the sunscreen, hat and gloves) |
| |
a good, non-leaking, sip-top water bottle with the student's name on it (or
even two) |
| |
In addition, please pack an extra snack or two, since it takes more energy
to stay warm in the outdoors. |
