James Turner

5th – 8th Grade

Howdy Students and Parents,

My name is James Turner and I am the 5th – 8th grade teacher here at CCS. I am excited about the possibilities this year and am looking forward to meeting all of you. Many of you are wondering who I am and what to expect for this school year. I will try to briefly answer those questions.

I recently moved here from Nebraska with my wife and three daughters. In Nebraska I was a part time stay at home dad and substitute teacher while my wife finished her nursing degree. Prior to that I taught high school Bible and history at an SDA academy in Oregon for five years. My college experience was varied and I went to five different colleges including one in Canada (where I met my wife) and a language school in Spain. I have a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education from Union College in Lincoln, Nebraska and a Master of Science in Outdoor Education from Southern Adventist University in Collegedale, Tennessee.

My list of interests and hobbies is very lengthy so here is the condensed version: seeing animals in the wild, primitive survival skills, thrift store shopping, collecting vintage wool shirts and blankets, sports (especially football), reading, Native American archeology, white water kayaking, and, last but not least, connecting with young people.

In my classroom you can expect a fun, yet focused atmosphere. I am a very easy-going and relaxed person, however I realize the importance of my job and do my best to meet the individual needs of the students and to push them to be their best in each area of the classroom. I make an effort to promote a safe environment where students as well as the teacher can make mistakes and still feel accepted. My motto for teaching is “Let the teacher teach and let the students learn.” My discipline philosophy is based on this. I look forward to challenging students to learn the academic skills that they will need for high school and to grow in their understanding of the Creator.
Get ready for hard work, lots of laughs and a great school year.
