Grant Andrew - Grades 7 & 8

I’m Grant Andrew. A few years ago teaching found me. Prior to my time here, I was in the business world, including 6 years with Citigroup. It was here that I discovered how much I liked to learn, and much of what I learned was math.

What hadn’t been entirely clear in an academic setting became a passion as I discovered its power. While I enjoyed leading teams and producing results, I always felt like there wasn’t enough time for people in the midst of profit.

Mr. Andrew

Education is different. As an avid reader and constant learner, I’ve spent the last year absorbing as much new information as possible – so I’m teaching and learning and applying new ideas into my work. While I can’t say I’d recommend my path to everyone, I am grateful for the opportunity to do something I love.

The aspect I love best about CCS is our focus on the Creator. In a world where human life is given more lip service and less value every day, a focus on the core of life – who we are, why we are here, and an appreciation for the beauty and complexity of the world around us – seems like an important anchor. For all that we understand about the world and life, so much still eludes us. Understanding and trusting that a force bigger than us holds the intricacies of life with precision and compassion can soften the storms.

I’m currently focused on enriching our curriculum on several fronts. Place-based education is one key area. A simple definition is learning the stories of the land and being a part of them. Really learning about one place gives students the tools to expand that knowledge wherever their life may take them. This year we’ll spend time outside understanding the environment and living things from a scientific view, read fiction and non-fiction about the Southwest, and use these experiences reflectively as inspiration for our writing.
